Why I Charge $500 for a Design Consultation (and Why You Should Too)
Dec 12, 2025Let’s Talk About the “Free Consultation” Trap
When I first started my design business, I offered free consultations - thinking it would help me book more clients.
It didn’t.
Instead, I spent hours driving to meetings, sharing advice, and giving away creative energy to people who were never going to move forward. It was seriously draining.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the truth: a consultation is not a sales call.
It’s a professional service - and when you treat it like one, everything in your business changes. Another words - treat your business like an actual business!
Why Paid Consultations Set the Tone for Success
Charging for consultations does three powerful things:
1️⃣ It sets professional boundaries.
-
You stop undervaluing your expertise. Your time = money!
-
You position yourself as a professional, not a “free resource.” The more free things you do early on, the more it will continue on later in the process! Set up boundaries right away.
2️⃣ It attracts the right kind of clients.
-
The ones who pay, stay. They either have money or they don't! Clients with money is what we want.
-
They come prepared, respectful, and ready to collaborate. Remember - the right clients look up to you as a professional who can resolve their problems because they can't do it themselves!
3️⃣ It builds trust and clarity.
-
Paid consultations create structure and professionalism.
-
You can confidently lead without feeling like you have to “prove” yourself. You're a professional in business who deserves to stay in business - therefore you're not going in MINUS by spending X amount of hours on FREE advises!
*Remember: when you lead - clients follow your lead. When you value your time - they will too.

What’s Included in My $500 Consultation
Before the session:
-
I review their questionnaire and concerns. (I usually start conversation by a discovery call to learn more about the project & see if they're even a client of interest to me or not).
- Next, I send them my Investment Guide for review - prior to us scheduling the in - person consultation - it includes outlined design process, my base starting pricing per square foot and examples of my work. If they see an issue with base starting pricing before hand - no need to even schedule a consultation - they cannot afford my design services. BUT if they're interested in scheduling a consultation - we might be in business there!
-
I prepare preliminary notes and ideas.
During the consultation:
-
We tour the space (in person).
-
We define goals, pain points, lead times & overall spending budget.
-
I offer expert recommendations on what's doable and manageable within their wishes & requests.
-
I help clients visualize what’s possible and what might have challenges (this is the time to say - we need an architect on this job or we might need a structural engineer or XYZ etc.).
After the session:
-
Clients receive a summary email outlining the scope to make sure nothing is missed from the consultation. I need their YES on scope of work before I dive into the proposal.
-
Next, I include a high-level proposal with my design fees, a tentative schedule guiding the through each Design Phase and thorough description of scope of work + other recommendations such as "architect fees are not included in this proposal but recommended separately" etc. (This is very very important to include in order to maintain the control of your design process, make yourself crystal clear - last thing you want is clients trying to control your design process & business structure!)
-
Clients leave with clarity and confidence - whether they hire me or not.
Why Clients Value a Paid Consultation
When clients invest in that first meeting, they:
-
Get focused, expert advice - not just inspiration.
-
Gain clarity about what’s realistic for their budget & timeline.
-
Experience your process and professionalism firsthand.
-
Feel empowered and excited to move forward.
Paid consultations are a win-win. The client feels guided, and you’re compensated for your expertise.

Red Flags: When Someone Refuses to Pay
If a potential client hesitates to pay your consultation fee, take note. It’s often a sign they’re not your ideal fit.
Common red flags:
-
“I just need a few quick ideas.”
-
“Can I pick your brain before I commit?”
-
“Another designer does this for free.”
-
They argue about price or downplay the value.
Those clients usually:
-
Delay decisions.
-
Undervalue your process.
-
Question every invoice later.
- Non-ending nightmare client that will want things for free!
Your energy is too valuable to waste on clients who don’t respect your boundaries.
What I’ve Learned from My Last Three Consultations
Over the past two months, I’ve had three consultations - and not all of them became projects. But every single one taught me something.
I learned that my ideal clients are those who:
-
Value thoughtful design and communication.
-
Respect my time and trust the process.
-
Are ready to invest in quality results.
-
See me as a creative partner, not a vendor.
Each consultation was profitable, purposeful, and aligned - even if it didn’t lead to a project.
For My Fellow Designers
If you’re still wondering whether you should charge for consultations, here’s your sign:
YES - you absolutely should.
When you do, you:
1. Attract serious, respectful clients.
2. Set clear professional boundaries.
3. Stop giving away your expertise for free.
4. Start running your business with confidence.
You’re not charging for an hour. You’re charging for the years of learning, creativity, and experience that make your advice valuable.
Respecting Your Time is Respecting Your Craft
The consultation fee isn’t a barrier - it’s a filter.
It helps you focus on the clients who are ready to create something meaningful with you.
So the next time someone questions your rate, remind yourself:
“I’m not charging for my time. I’m charging for my expertise.”
Your creativity and confidence are worth every penny - and when you believe that, your clients will too!
