Weekly Newsletter Dec. 5 '25 When Going Above and Beyond Becomes Too Much

Hi there, designer đź‘‹

Well, we’re at the last month of this year! Phew - I’m so ready to put this one behind...

I don’t know if you can relate, but this has been one of the most difficult years I can remember - it felt like no matter how much I planned or poured in, something always went sideways...

So this month, I’ve been reflecting on a theme that keeps coming up in my work and conversations with other designers…

When "above and beyond" becomes too much

This week on the blog, I shared a very personal story about a bathroom renovation project that taught me a painful (but necessary) lesson about boundaries.

It started as a dream project with clients I adored. But as time went on, the project stretched further and further - and I found myself saying yes to everything: vendor chaos, unpaid hours, constant re-selections, and emotional labor that left me drained.

At some point, I had to ask myself: At what cost to me?

That’s when I finally drew the line - not because I didn’t care, but because I had to protect my time, energy, and peace.

It wasn’t easy, but it was the start of reclaiming joy in my work again.

Here’s what I learned

You are allowed to stop.
You are allowed to say, this is enough.
You are allowed to protect your creativity, your energy, and your worth and your business.

Scope isn’t the enemy - it’s the foundation of respect.
Not every client will see your effort - but the right ones will.
And done is a gift, too.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin or underappreciated lately, I hope this reminder lands softly with you: You are not alone.

Weekly Newsletter Mar. 20 '26 - Why I Sometimes Tell Designers Not to Buy My Course
Hi there, designer 👋 I received a few emails recently from designers asking about my AutoCAD course. I always appreciate when designers reach out with questions - it means you're actively trying to grow your skills. But when I asked a few follow-up questions, I realized they were working on Mac computers, and my course is designed for PC users. So I told them something that might sound a little...
Weekly Newsletter Mar. 13 '26 - One Corridor. Three Hours. $3,000
Hi there, designer 👋 Last week we talked about outsourcing and why building your own technical skills early in your business can make a huge difference. This week I want to share a quick real-life example from my studio. A contractor I’ve worked with for years called me recently and said: "Ana, we have this long corridor in one of our projects and honestly… it's just ugly. The clients don’t kno...
Weekly Newsletter Mar. 06 '26 - When to Outsource VS. When to Build Skill First
Hi there, designer 👋 Let’s talk about something that comes up often in conversations with other designers - outsourcing. Now before we start — I’m not against outsourcing at all. In fact, as your business grows and your projects become larger, bringing in help can be a really smart move. But there’s something important I’ve learned over the years running my own design studio. If you outsource T...
