Weekly Newsletter Dec. 12 '25 Why I Charge $500 for a Design Consultation

Hi there, designer 👋

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed I’ve been totally MIA lately (lol, sorry not sorry!). That only means one thing — I’ve been deep in the behind-the-scenes work, really focusing on my businesses.

Over the past two months, I’ve been job hunting, and I’ve had three major design consultations that will basically shape my entire 2026! Earlier this year, I lost a few potential projects because my vision didn’t align with my clients’ — and honestly, that was a blessing. It pushed me to get even clearer on who I want to work with and how I want to show up as a professional.

And here’s one thing that hasn’t changed through it all:
I always charge for my consultations — no matter the outcome.

Why I Charge a $500 Consultation Fee

Your consultation isn’t just a quick chat — it’s the foundation of every successful project.

Here’s what it does for you (and your client):

  •  Sets professional boundaries from the start

  •  Filters out clients who aren’t serious or ready or CHEAP!

  •  Builds trust and structure into your process

  •  Positions you as the expert from day one

And for your clients? They walk away with:

  • Clarity on what’s realistic for their space

  • Confidence in your process

  • A roadmap to get their dream design started

It’s not just a meeting — it’s a strategic working session.

What Happens When Clients Refuse to Pay

If a potential client hesitates to pay for a consultation, that’s usually a red flag.
They’re often looking for free ideas & deals, not real partnership.

And here’s what I’ve learned the hard way:
When someone questions your consultation fee, they’ll likely question everything else — from your design decisions to your invoices.

Your consultation fee is your first boundary — and boundaries attract respect.

3 Consultations, 3 Lessons

In the last two months, each of my consultations taught me something valuable:

- The right clients appreciate structure and clarity.
- Paid consultations help me spot dream clients faster.
- Every “no” makes space for a better “yes.”

Whether the project moves forward or not, I always walk away proud of the process — and paid for my time.

Your creativity, insight, and process are worth it — and the clients who value that will never question it.

💬 If you need a little extra confidence to start charging for your consultations, I’ve shared full story (plus red flags to look out for) in my latest blog post.

Before you go - A Little Sneak Peek...

I’m not superstitious, but I’m a little stitious 😂 — so I don’t want to jinx myself — but…

I’ve been working quietly behind the scenes on something big: my upcoming Furnish & Flourish e-books!

They’re 99% complete, and I’ve already logged nearly 130 to-the-trade vendors (with just 10–20 more to go before I officially put the pencil down 📝).

Designers, get ready — we’re launching right after New Year’s Eve to celebrate 2026 in style:

- smoother systems
- stronger resources
- and more money-making potential for your business! (We're MAKING MONEY in 2026! Manifest it with ME! 😂)

Stay tuned — it’s going to be so worth the wait. 💚

With warmth,
Ana 🌸

Weekly Newsletter Feb. 6 '26 - Flat Fee vs. Per Square Footage for Full-Design Service
Hi there, designer 👋 This week, something really special happened. One of my closest friends reached out and asked for help with her very first client proposal. We used to work together back in corporate - long days, big presentations, senior-level work… and paychecks that absolutely did not reflect the effort. Now she’s starting her own business, and I couldn’t be more excited for her! Of cour...
Weekly Newsletter Jan. 30 '26 - Why Structure Makes Client Presentations Easier
Hi there, designer 👋 I wrapped up another client presentation this morning, and it went really well!Although I’m super tired after another long week and will definitely be going to bed at 9 tonight 😂 It went well not because the design was flashy - it worked because it was well structured. The presentation was clear, intentional, and easy to follow - for both me and the client. And it was a goo...
Weekly Newsletter Jan. 23 '26 - Five Years Later: What Hard Work Really Builds
Hi there, designer 👋 I can still remember it so vividly - my son was just six months old when I looked at my husband and said, “Do you believe in me?”And he smiled and said, "I believe in you more than I believe in myself!" I was postpartum, exhausted, and had no idea what I was doing -but something inside me said: why wait? So I registered my business that week and received a business license ...
